Can Student Prayer Be Voluntary?
To the Editor: Contrary to the assertions of Michael Novak (Op-Ed, June 18), many of us oppose ”scheduled prayer” in the schools not because we think it degrades the school but because we believe it demeans the prayer. Rather than scold nonbelievers for refusing to submit silently to the kind of officially sanctioned invocations he proposes, perhaps Mr. Novak should direct his attention toward those believers who are apparently so weak in their faith that they cannot seem to muster up a prayer without the math teacher’s help.
