Who gets birdshot?
Slightly more women then men seem to get birdshot, the average age is 53 years, but at least one patient was diagnosed at the age of 4. HLA A29 is present in 7% of Caucasians. Only two patients have been identified that were not Caucasian. 4. What causes or triggers birdshot? The cause for birdshot is unknown. There is a strong link to the presence of HLA-A29, suggesting that the disease may be inherited. The most recent studies indicate approximately 95% are HLA-A29 positive. Currently, the prognosis for birdshot is blindness. However, this is not a given and many patients have prolonged and severe cases of birdshot, and are able to led relatively normal lives.
