How do I paint an iron fence?
Wash the iron fence with a pressure washer. Allow the fence to dry. Don protective gloves. Remove rust by scraping it with a wire brush. Remove smaller rust fragments using 80-grit sandpaper.Apply a zinc-chromate or red-oxide primer to the iron fence using a mini roller. Do not use an ordinary acrylic or oil-based primer, as this will not protect the fence from rust. Apply primer to areas too tight or awkward for the roller using a paintbrush made for applying oil-based paints. Allow the primer to dry for two hours.Wash the paintbrush with mineral spirits. Apply a coat of oil-based enamel paint to the primed iron fence in the same way you applied the zinc-chromate or red-oxide primer.
