How much does it cost per year to own a horse?
A lot… One suggestion, find your vet first. Before you buy a horse, talk to your vet, and get his/her opinion on it…Even take him/her to look at it. If you haven’t had a horse, you may miss some problem that the current owner might not be telling you. To find a broke, healthy (sound) horse will probably not be too cheap… You do need shots every year, also, are you going to need shoes for the horse, or not…We have a farrier out every two months and it is about 60 to have the feet trimmed on one horse. We don’t need to board them, so not sure on that cost, and we also grow/bale our own hay… We do obviously have to buy feed, which we get in bulk, and for 1,000 pound of sweet feed, is around $120…usually get that twice a year. You may be able to find second hand tack, but make sure they are in good shape…lead ropes and stuff like that should be fine…halters, I would probably get new, unless seller barely used them.
