What is a Proofreader?
Proofreading traditionally means reading a proof copy of a text, in order to detect and correct any errors. However from our experience it covers this and a lot more! Depending on which company or industry you are working in the role will cover and require a number of different skill sets. As a proofreader, document checker or examiner not only will you correct spelling and grammar but you may also need to assess the document against brand guidelines, rationalise font and text sizes, rewrite text so that it makes sense and or correct poor alignment or visual layout issues. Although an eye for detail and an excellent understanding of language are essential prior experience is often a pre-requisite, however if you haven’t proofed before and come from an editorial or writing background, many clients will still be happy to review your application.
