How Do You Safely Install A Ceiling Fan?

0

This article will be informative to the “do it yourselfer” who wants to install a ceiling fan where ever. Ok, lets get started with your beautiful new ceiling fan. If there is a fan there already you should be ready but you may want to check support anyway. If you are adding to an existing box with a fixture only new support will probably be needed. Find power source and kill power. This can be done by just turning switch off but I recommend killing at power panel for safeties sake. Take old fixture down and check support, If a metal box is affixed under a stud with screws you should be alright. If not and you see a plastic box you will need to change that also to a metal box. Hopefully you will have attic access, if not you may buy a fan hanging box with turn out rods from your local home store. If you do have attic access, that is great. Attach a 2×4″ stud from ceiling joist to ceiling joist. Screws are recommended because sometimes a hammer will loosen ceiling popcorn or sheetrock.
