Silbury Hill is approximately 4600 years old. It is situated around Avebury in Wiltshire, The hill has not only the distinction of being the tallest mound that is man made and pre historic but it is considered as one of the largest in the world. The base of the hill is spread in the area of around 2 hectares and the rise is about 39.6 m. It is one of the best examples of human effort as it took approximately 18 million human hours to complete it and they put 248,000 cubic metres of earth on the upper part of the hill. The excavations of the hill took place three times; the first was when the Duke of Northumberland made it dig from top to the bottom of the mound, another took place in 1849 when they dug a tunnel from edge to the core of the hill, the third occurred when professor Richard Atkinson dug a tunnel at the base.
