What is benign self-deception?
Benign self-deception is the tendency that people have to deceive themselves into believing that they are something that they are not. It is an all to common phenomenon in life, particularly when it comes to careers. There are a lot of reasons for this. Some people convince themselves that a career is right for them because it is viewed positively by society, family or peers. For example, in business school a large percentage of students seek prestigious jobs at investment banks and consulting firms. Is this because they genuinely love that kind of work? Or is it because it is viewed positively by others. One of the key objectives of Career Next Step is to help transcend self-deception and identify the true interests and motivators that define who you are.
