Whats Going on With Guthrie?
Jeremy Guthrie will be the Orioles’ Opening Day starter on Monday but his performance this spring has been a cause for concern. In his final spring training start yesterday against the Marlins, Guthrie got worked over to the tune of eight runs in four innings of work in a 12-2 drubbing by Florida. Guthrie, who was the team’s only effective starting pitcher last season, has been knocked around all spring. In two starts with Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, Guthrie got torched for 10 runs in less than four total innings of work, giving him a 14.73 ERA. Guthrie’s spring training ERA is lower, but not by much at 10.57. And while Guthrie says he’s healthy and is refusing to pin any of the blame on the WBC, the Orioles ace has seen a decrease in velocity, topping out around 91 mph this spring.
