Why Steroid Injections?
Podiatrists sometimes treat some conditions by injecting “corticosteroids” (derivatives of cortisone). Steroids, such as dexamethasone, are potent anti-inflammatory agents and can give significant relief. Some conditions that can respond well include plantar fasciitis/heel spur syndromes, capsulitis (inflammation of the capsule around a joint), bursitis and some types of arthritis. The injections, with proper techniques, can be given without causing major pain since the steroid is often mixed with a local anesthetic (e.g., lidocaine). The skin can be prepared with, for example, Ethyl Chloride to minimize the trauma of the needle. Are these injections harmful? Theoretically, steroids can cause some unwanted side effects, like the weakening of the internal structure of a tendon that can lead to a rupture.
