Why Heart of Midlothian?
Scotland has some unusual club names and nicknames, and Heart of Midlothian is among those with an unusual back story. The club is named after an 1818 novel by Sir Walter Scott and is the seventh of his Waverley Novels, and probably the best. Other well known rivals are Rob Roy and Ivanhoe. Much of the dialogue in Heart of Midlothian is in Lowland Scots, and some editions even carry a glossary (for culturally disadvantaged Anglo-Saxon readers!). The club crest of the Tynecastle club is based directly on the mosaic on the pavement.
