How will the synthetic turf effect programs and other uses?
The lighted synthetic fields will allow year-round use of the space and will extend the daily use into the evening hours. Currently, the grass fields are scheduled for 7‐8 weeks in the fall, 7‐8 weeks in the spring, and limited times during the summer. The remainder of the year, fields are closed to allow for restoration of the grass. The improved surface will provide a safer condition and an environment that will attract use. When the IM basketball program moved from Langton Hall [1919 building with a poor basketball court conditions] to the newly expanded and renovated Dixon RecCenter, team registration from 150 to over 200 teams, in one year. A similar dynamic is expected with renovation of the sport fields.
