What is Orthotic Treatment?
The feet are highly complex mechanical organs which have a profound effect on the rest of the body. If the feet are unstable the results can be pain and dysfunction not only in the feet and ankles but also in the legs knees hips and back. Podiatrists prescribe foot orthotics to correctly align and stabilize the foot. They are specially designed devices worn in the shoe to control abnormal foot function. This is often achieved by limiting over- pronation of the foot. Over pronation (a complex movement where the heel and forefoot evert and the lower leg internally rotates) strains the ligaments and muscles and is often the root cause of lower limb problems.
