What does a solicitor do?

This can vary quite a lot depending on what area of law the solicitor is specialising in (and there are a large number of different specialisms). For example someone specialising in family law will work on divorces, child custody issues, care proceedings, pre-nuptial agreements, etc, which all involve meeting with clients, representing in court, ensuring all paperwork is in order, etc. Then there’s specialisms like conveyancing where you would be involved in the legal process people have to go through to purchase property – this tends to be much more office based, lots of cross checking of documentation, very meticulous, etc, and virtually no court work. That’s just two specialisms. Have a look in the Yellow Pages for a large firm of solicitors in your area and then take a look at their website. Most will give brief overviews of the kind of work all the different specialisms do.
