If a parent has dependent children living with them, are those children taken into account when calculating child support payments to or from an ex partner?

0

Yes. We recognise a parent’s dependent child/ren, with a view that all biological and adoptive children of either parent should be treated as equally as possible. As the child support formula treats both parents’ incomes in the same way, parents who pay or receive child support will be able to have dependent children from a new relationship (i.e. not child support children) recognised when their child support is worked out. In special circumstances, parents who care for a step-child can apply for a change of assessment to have their child support payments reviewed, if neither of the step-child’s biological parents are able to financially support the child due to death, ill health or caring responsibilities. To make changes to your child support assessment call CSA on 131 272 or fill out the change of assessment form.
