Why do Staph infections occur?
Staph germs are everywhere. Soap and water are the best agents to fight infection. Wash your hands often, especially after using the bathroom or handling dirty objects. Keep your skin clean before and after surgery. Stay as active as you can since this helps your circulation. Do not smoke any tobacco products. Eat a well-balanced diet, especially before and after surgery. Keep any chronic conditions under control. For example, people with diabetes should keep their blood sugar within a normal range. If you have skin sores, you should let your surgeon know this before you have surgery. Any of these infections may be caused by Staph aureus or MRSA. Either type can cause minor or serious infections. Getting an infection due to MRSA does not make the infection more serious, it just limits the types of antibiotics, creams, or ointments that can be used to treat the infection.
