What Is Baleen Used for?
Baleen, or whalebone, was historically used for a number of applications, particularly women’s fashion; corset stays, parasols, brushes and whips were all made with baleen. Today, baleen has been replaced by plastic, modern metals or synthetic materials in some of those items, while others are not relevant in today’s society. Given current whaling laws, baleen is now used only by native Alaskans in the production of items for daily use and collectible baskets.
