Collagen, Elastin and Gravity Several things contribute to the formation of under-eye wrinkles. The first is the unavoidable process of aging. As you age, your skin loses collagen, which keeps your skin tight. You also lose elastin, which keeps your skin elastic. Collagen makes your skin appear firm and smooth. Elastin helps it “bounce back” when a wrinkle forms under the eye due to smiling, crying or other expressions. Once you hit the magic age of 30, your skin starts to decrease its production of collagen and elastin. This means that wrinkles are able to form much easier, especially in the skin under the eye because that layer of skin is so thin.
