How Do You Hand Sew A Slip Stitch?
A slip stitch is a hand sewing stitch that is virtually invisible. It is hard to see on either side of the fabric. The slip stitch is used to hem clothing such as dresses, and to also tack lining and facings in place. Here are directions on how to hand sew a slip stitch. Thread your needle and knot. Use a single thread of fabric instead of a double thread. Keep the unknotted edge of the fabric through the eye of the needle by several inches. Turn your item inside out, and fold the hem where you will be sewing. Fold a 1/4 inch hem twice so that the raw edges do not show. Hold the folded edge of the fabric between your fingers with the fabric folded back on itself, revealing the edge where you will be sewing. Prick the needle under the threads on each side of the fold, picking up just a few threads of fabric on each side, and pull the needle through.
