What does mixed media mean?
Mixed media means that an artist has used more than one form of media (oil, watercolor, acrylic, etc.) to create a piece of art. In the case of my paintings I start with pencil to layout the image on the canvas, which is then sealed with a transparent layer of paint. The next step is to mix the paint for the impasto layer; in art, impasto refers to the technique where paint is applied so thickly that it stands out from the surface. This impasto gives the paintings a sculptural quality, which furthers the interaction of the painting with changing light conditions. Several layers of paint are then applied to create depth of color in the final image. I use oil, powdered pigments, acrylics and graphite to create these “mixed media” pieces.
