Why are persian cats so expensive?
You can expect to pay in the range of R 2,000 – R4,500 for a pet. It depends on the quality of the cat and kitten, if it has been neutered / spayed and number of vaccinations the kitten has received. When you add all of the expenses, there is no ‘money to be made’ out of breeding. Show quality kittens often get sold as pets, but are more expensive then ‘Pet’ quality kittens. Breeding is very expensive. Bloodlines are very important and expensive to acquire and Veterinarians are not cheap. Good quality food to maintain a cattery, adds to the selling price. It is always recommended to buy from a reputable breeder as you are assured of getting a healthy, quality kitten. “BYB” or “Backyard breeders” sell unregistered kittens at any age, to anyone. I have heard many sad stories of ‘bad transactions’. Unlike ‘BYB’, reputable breeders will sell a kitten with a health guarantee and offer assistance to the new owner. Help reputable breeders by not buying from BYB’s.
