African Americans have strong ties to the military. In this poll, 36% of African American voters are military family members – that is, either they themselves or an immediate family member is currently serving in the U.S. military. This number is higher among African Americans than it is among voters overall. In a CBS News/New York Times Poll conducted in July, 21% of voters nationwide said they were a military family member. African American voters, like voters nationwide, are overwhelmingly opposed to reinstating the military draft to provide soldiers for the Iraq conflict. 82% oppose the draft.
