What Is Pipe Flanging?
Pipe-flanging machines create specific end shapes that allow the joining of pipe sections without the need for expensive welded flanges. Imagine the end of a pipe — it’s simple and cylindrical. By adding a prefabricated slip flange (think of the bottom of an Abe Lincoln stovepipe hat) to two different pipe sections, pipes can be joined together without the threat of leaks. Pipe-flanging machines use a metal shaping process known as cold forming. With cold forming, metal tubes or pipes are shaped using increased pressure (as opposed to heat). Making use of a hydraulic press, pipe-flanging machines feature a hammering motion that shapes the end of a pipe into a flange.
