Whats Going On with Gov. Paterson?
Four days ago, New York Daily News reporter Elizabeth Benjamin wrote in her blog that a “bombshell” was about to drop about New York Gov. David Paterson, kicking off a firestorm of media speculation about Paterson’s past transgressions. So far, Paterson has categorically denied the rumors—which range from drug use to getting caught by a state trooper in a “somewhat-compromising position”—and maintained that he has no plans to retire or step down before the upcoming election. At Politico, Ben Smith says that Paterson is scheduled to speak with the Times today, although at New York, Gabriel Sherman hears that “the piece is PG-13, not XXX.” The Times has refused to comment on the story, and Paterson has attacked rumors as “callous and sleazy.” The big winner in the situation, NPR’s Ken Rudin says, is Andrew Cuomo, who is expected to be the Democratic nominee for governor, and can only come out on top during a real—or imagined—Paterson scandal.
