What is transcoding?
Transforming information from one form to another is sometimes called transcoding. Intermediaries, such as WBI, make good platforms for developing and deploying transcoding applications. • What is the relationship between WBI and IBM WebSphere Transcoding Publisher? Plugins developed with WBI Development Kit version 4.5 will run under IBM WebSphere Transcoding Publisher (WTP) version 1.1.2 with a few exceptions. Several features new to WBI 4.5 have not yet been incorporated into WTP, though they will be available in a future release of WTP. In particular, • the new MegObject interface • the HttpCookie and HttpSetCookie as well as HeaderField and some methods of MimeHeaderAscii • RequestEvent.mayReject() and RequestEvent.wontReject() are not available in WTP 1.1. Plugins developed for WBI DK version 4.4 will run without qualification on WTP version 1.1. But note that plugins developed with older versions of the WBI DK (e.g., version 4.1 and 4.3) may not work with WTP.
Transcoding is an option available on video conferencing bridges that allows conferences to be established with participants using different video conferencing formats. For instance systems and location using ISDN (H.320) can seamlessly communicate with other locations using IP or Internet connections (H.323). Together with Transrating, Academic Technology Services can provide flexible video conferences that can accommodate various video conferencing standards and a wide range of data rates and bandwidths.
