What is CSME?
THE CARICOM SINGLE Market and Economy (CSME) is supposed to provide a number of opportunities for trade within the Caribbean Region yet the lack of public education has hampered the implementation of the programme. Although the initiative was launched earlier this year, not many Jamaicans have been accessing the benefits, or even know how to do so. The CSME is to facilitate the free movement of labour and skills across various CARICOM states. The lack of education about the programme is one of the problems recognised by the CSME Unit based in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. In a recent report detailing the challenges affecting the implementation of the programme in Jamaica, the CSME noted that public education was greatly needed. The document further stated that steps were being taken to address the information problem.
