Why is a Root Canal Needed?

0

A root canal may be needed if the pulp within the tooth becomes infected. Infection of the tooth can be caused by cracks or chips, trauma to the tooth, repeated dental procedures, or a deep cavity. Symptoms of a pulpal infection can include: sensitivity to temperatures, constant pain & throbbing, swelling of the gums or visible trauma. To remove the infected pulp, an endodontic procedure called root canal therapy or pulpectomy is performed. The root canal therapy procedure entails that the infected pulp be removed and the root canals be thoroughly cleaned & sealed with a material called Gutta percha. Once this procedure is done an appropriate restoration, often a filling or crown, will be recommended to protect the tooth and the sealed root canals.
