Is Mount St. Helens in Seattle?
Mount St. Helens is not in Seattle. The active stratovolcano can be found in the Pacific Northwest region of the U.S. in Skamania County, Washington. The volcano is located about 96 miles away from Seattle and is actually much closer to the city of Portland, being only about 50 miles away. Mount St. Helens is a part of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, which is a portion of the Pacific Ring of Fire and encompasses more than 160 active volcanoes. Mount St. Helens is best known for its hugely destructive eruption on May 18, 1980, which killed 57 people, and destroyed 250 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles of railways, and 185 miles of highway and is considered to be the deadliest volcanic eruptions in United States history.
