What is the Paramedic Academy?
The paramedic academy is a course intended to educate a person certified at the EMT-Basic level to become a Paramedic. The course is 1,158 hrs. long and is held Monday – Thursday for approximately 9 months. The students then work as a functional member on an ambulance every other weekend. Students are full time employees during and after their education and are selected based on their performance prior to the beginning of class. All class materials are provided to each student. This program is unique in that students learn where they will work and are able to use the skills and knowledge acquired, immediately in a clinical environment. All paramedic academy students are contractually obligated to serve as a Guilford County paramedic for two years following North Carolina certification at the paramedic level.
