GNU Emacs is the most powerful and extensible editor available on the Linux platform, but it is also convenient to use. It is completely functional using only a keyboard, but also has full support for mouse input and windowed environments. Because its interface is the same on any CAEN Linux machine, you will spend more time editing and less time adapting to the quirks of varying editors and workstations. Being familiar with Emacs can make editing chores quick and simple. Emacs has a function for almost everything, from checking spelling to reading mail to running a debugger within the editor. Special modes provide extra functions for editing C or Lisp source code, formatting TeX and LaTeX files, or just writing plain English text.
