Why the Axtell area?
There are a very limited number of transmission interconnections between Nebraska and Kansas. This results in periods of heavy congestion on the exiting transmission paths. The Axtell, Neb. to Spearville, Kansas 345,000-volt line will provide a new parallel path to reduce the existing congestion. Also, Kansas has announced plans to build wind farms in the central and western areas of Kansas, and transmission lines will be needed to transport the green, renewable energy generated at those farms to places where people live, work and need the power. In addition, transmission planners from NPPD and the Southwest Power Pool studied the area and determined that the Axtell Substation is the most effective location, from an electrical energy flow perspective, for the north termination point of this project.
