Is a Steel Roof walkable??
YES!! The most walkable stone coated steel roof design is the Metro Shake 2. Commonly the Metro Shake 2 design is installed by nailing directly to skip or full plywood sheathing. By installing direct to the deck, the air gap between the sheathing and the steel is minimal. If the air gap is nearly eliminated then the likelihood of the steel panel denting is greatly diminished. When a steel product is installed on wood battens, then the air gap is increased by up to 3 inches. Most stone coated steel panel roof assemblies require the steel panels to be fastened with nails to a 2 x 2 wood batten. When walking on a steel roof with battens, only walk where the 2 x 2 battens are. Do not walk or step in the middle of the panel. The middle is not supported by battens and will dent if walked/stepped on.
