What is enteric coating used for?

This coating ensures maximum delivery of the enzyme to the body when used properly. Why is it important? Because stomach acid denatures the enzyme and small intestine acid does not; therefore, when using a full enteric coating, the maximum amount of the enzyme bypasses the stomach unharmed and goes to work in the body via the small intestine. How does it work? The coating stays strong in strong acid and weakens in weak acid – the opposite of what you might think. If you eat before taking an enteric product, you dilute your stomach acid, thereby negating the coating and in turn destroying the enzyme because although the acid is weak enough to break down the coating, it is still too powerful for the enzyme to survive. Conversely, when taken on an empty stomach, the enteric coating remains intact and then the acid of the small intestine breaks down the coating but does not harm the enzyme.
