What is a Guidance Counselor?
Traditionally known as a guidance counselor, a title unique to American educational system, the name is truly reflective of the philosophy of education and discipline that is based on children learning to make responsible choices. Guidance counselors are usually the first source of help for teachers, students, and parents. Teachers may consult with the counselor or refer a student who is experiencing difficulties in the classroom to the counselor. Progress reports, term grades, and standardized test results are regularly reviewed by counselors in order to track student achievement and identify those who might be academically or otherwise at risk. Parents are encouraged to bring a student to the counselors attention or to ask for help with their children.
