What is Conwy Agri Innovation?
Conwy Agri Innovation provides support to farmers interested in exploring the viability of alternative crops, livestock or agricultural practice. An ageing farming population, changes to the Single Farm Payment, and increased demand for local agricultural produce are all contributing factors to the need for this type of project within Rural Conwy. Many local farmers are being forced to find alternative sources of income, but a non-agricultural route is only an option in a few cases, as most farmers (and their farms) aren’t suited to setting up a non-agricultural business. Conwy Agri Innovation project allows them to explore alternatives within their area of expertise. Farmers take part on an experimental basis – one year for an individual farm unit, two where farmer groups are participating – allowing them to trial new methods without the usual associated risk. At the end of the trial, procedures and results are disclosed so that other local farms can benefit.
