A light-emitting diode – LED is a semiconductor device that emits light when an electrical current passes through it. LEDs are commonly used as indicator lights on electrical equipment. In fiber optics, LEDs are used as a light source for low speed signals such as TOSLINK, due to their low cost. The LED cannot be used for transmitting high speed signals such as video.
