Why Evolution VERSUS Creationism?
(the nature of the controversy) Since the publication of Charles Darwin’s The Origin of the Species in 1859, some religious sects, most particularly fundamentalist Christians, have attacked the theory of evolution in various ways, due to its perceived conflict with the Bible. The battle between evolution and the “creationism” of biblical literalists perhaps began in earnest in 1925, during what is now known as “the Scopes Monkey Trial.” The trial of John Scopes brought into full public view a controversy over science, religion, law and education, one that unfortunately still rages today. The modern creationist methodology is generally three-fold: first, to criticize the scientific literature in order to cast doubt on its accuracy and/or veracity; second, to “expose” the current gaps in evolutionary theory, and then argue that these gaps can never be bridged by purely naturalistic inquiry; and third, to promote alternative theories to evolution that make colorably scientific claims whic
