Why are parents NOT notified by text/cell phone/etc. during a campus emergency?

The University Police has the WAKE Alert system. It has the capability of activating a mass alert via cell phones (voice and text), landlines, and e-mail. Only members of the campus community are included in these notifications because it is imperative that the message go out as quickly as possible. If you add additional populations to the text/cell distribution list (such as parents, often both parents have cell phones), it runs the risk of slowing down the notification process to our students who need to receive the message immediately. E-mail is not used for imminent danger emergencies that require quick notification. Students must register their cell phone to receive WAKE Alert messages.
