Whats involved in a DEXA scan?
You have to lie on a scan table – which is not enclosed in any way – and we’d like you not to wear any jewellery or metal in your clothing. The scanner scans across your spine and your hips (the common sites of fracture risk) and also looks at the shape and position of your vertebrae. There are no injections and the procedure is short and painless. The x- ray dose is small – much below that in, for example, a chest x-ray. After calculations by the scanner’s onboard computers, we are able to assess your bone health and safety – and we then print out the results.
