What is the Consumer Legal Remedies Act?
CLRA is a California statute intended to protect consumers against unfair and deceptive business practices. It lists numerous practices that are unlawful in connection with a transaction intended to result in the sale or lease of goods or services to any consumer. For example, it prohibits misrepresenting the source, certification, origin, or quality of goods and services. It also prohibits advertising goods or services with intent not to sell them as advertised, among many other things. Under CLRA, a consumer can seek actual damages, injunctive relief, restitution, attorneys’ fees, and/or punitive damages. In addition, claims under CLRA typically are brought as class actions.
