Can asparagus be steamed?
You can, in fact, buy steamer pots that are specifically designed for asparagus. They are relatively tall and narrow, so the spears are held upright. (My stepmother also likes to use her asparagus steamer pot to do corn on the cob.) Steaming time will vary depending on the size of the spears and your personal preference (if you like them crisp-tender, etc.; it doesn’t usually take long, however). Another really good way to do them is to oven roast them: Heat oven to 425 degrees Farenheit. Toss asparagus spears in olive oil. Place spears in a jellyroll pan (like a cookie sheet, with sides) and cook until crisp but tender. Check carefully, this should take no more than 10-15 minutes (perhaps even less). I like to dress up the spears with fresh ground pepper and a squeeze or two of lemon juice before I put them in to roast.
