Claying – what is it?
The purpose of claying is to remove bonded contaminants from the paintwork of your vehicle. These contaminants cannot be removed by polishing, as well as reducing the effectiveness of your polish. When machining, they can cause the compound polishes and machine pads to ‘pick up’, making the process more difficult. • To check if your car needs claying: The next time you finish washing and drying your car, place your hand in a clear, smooth plastic sandwich bag and push the palm (not finger tips) of your hand along the paintwork; it should feel completely smooth, like wet glass. If it feels rough, or if you can feel lumps and bumps, your paintwork needs claying. Claying works by using an automotive clay bar in conjunction with a quick detailing spray which is used as lubricant. The bar is pushed along the paint, gliding on a barrier of detailing spray between itself and the paintwork’s surface.
