I think it’s undeniable that welfare does help many people, many families. It also helps society as a whole – including the people who don’t need welfare – by tending to reduce the desperation that can lead to criminal acts like robbery or burglary. It helps people put food on their tables, be able to wash their clothes and pay their bills, stay in their apartments or homes. It thus prevents homelessness and malnutrition. There would be a lot more homeless without it, and without it more people would end up flooding our emergency rooms uninsured and suffering chronic disease as a result of various deficiencies and the long term damage it creates. Also, people who can’t afford to have clean clothes or pay for public transportation or gas are pretty much excluded from any reasonable possibility of finding any kind of employment to get out of the welfare system.
