How do manatees get their scars?
Manatees get their scars mostly from collisions with boat propellers, but they also get them from entanglement in fishing gear and from fungal infections. Sometimes these scars heal, but often they remain on the manatee for the duration of its life. Despite the obvious negative impact these collisions have on manatees, we use these scars to identify individual manatees.
