The Permanent Resident Card, or green card, grants rights to a foreign individual to live and work in the United States without restrictions. The green card is valid for 10 years from the issue date. But the card itself merely confirms the lawful permanent resident status. The green card expiration has no effect on your legal immigrant status. Simply use the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Form I-90 to renew your expired green card. Open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox, on your computer and download the I-90 form, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card and the form instructions (see Resources). Note that both documents are in PDF format. Carefully read the instructions for filing the Form I-90 petition. Print out the blank I-90 form to fill it out.
