Who is WIOCC?
WIOCC (www.wiocc.net) is a company set up as a vehicle for investment in the EASSy submarine cable system, with its offices in Nairobi, Kenya. WIOCC is jointly owned by a grouping of 14 African telecoms operators in Africa, all first or second-tier operators in their respective countries. WIOCC is also funded by a number of global Development Finance Institutions (DFI’s) such as World Bank, AfDB, AFD & KFW. WIOCC is the single largest shareholder (29%) in the EASSy cable. As well as serving EASSy’s 9 seaboard countries, WIOCC is using its shareholders’ extensive backhaul national networks to bring services from EASSy’s coastal landing stations to major cities in each country. Collaborative construction of these resilient backhaul systems, using fibre-optic rings based on dark fibre pricing – means landlocked countries will have virtually the same cost base as coastal countries for the first time. WIOCC is also extending services beyond the EASSy network by establishing interconnection
