What did people eat in the 50s?
They ate food that was a lot heavier in milk, butter, cream and eggs than we do today. I have an old Betty Crocker cook book my mother had from the ’50’s and the recipes are significantly higher in these ingredients. We ate a lot more fried food, chicken, baked potatoes, corn on the cobb, lots of cereals, less on the salad or vegetable side because these were not seasonally available except in the summer when we ate lots of fresh vege’s out of the garden. Back then, most people had a house and they had a vegetable garden outside, but it was very seasonal…so we ate a lot more canned food. Frozen food was a brand new idea back then, like frozen corn and peas, and our parents were raised on canned, and so they preferred the taste associated with canned food even though it is not as good nutritionally as frozen is or had as good a texture. Also, the portions of food were much bigger then then they are today. We ate a lot of mashed potatoes and gravy. Dinners were a lot bigger than today.
