Gophers and moles are two of the biggest nuisance pests any homeowner will have to contend with. Both of these pesky creatures are small rodents that live in expansive underground tunnel systems, which can destroy the delicate root systems under your lawn and garden. Killing gophers and moles may not be pleasant to think about, but it is the most reliable method to remove them. Locate mole and gopher tunnels. Both types of rodent live underground in systems of interconnecting tunnels, and only rarely come above the surface. Look for small mounds of fresh dirt, which indicate the presence of a tunnel. Push the shovel into the ground around the mound. Little to no resistance against the shovel indicates the presence of a tunnel. Set a spike trap at the entrance to each tunnel you locate.
