A common disease in freshwater fish, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, or ich, proves to be potentially fatal. It is caused by parasitic protozoa that encase themselves in cysts on the fish’s scales. The encysted parasites appear as small, white flecks or nodes on the fish’s body. In goldfish, ich is one of the most common conditions and becomes fatal without treatment. Ich turns the fish anemic, and they slowly whither and starve as the ich feed off of them. Treating ich in goldfish is easy and brief, but it requires permanent upkeep to prevent future outbreaks. Set up the 20-gallon aquarium by filling it with filtered water and inserting the submersible heater. Place the filtration system over one side of it. Plug the heater and filter in and allow them to power on. Administer the ich treatment into the 20-gallon aquarium.
