Does Excess Sugar Affect Acne?
There is an age-old belief that sugar causes acne. This belief states that taking in too much sugar can cause a sudden break-out of acne across the body. However, is this truly the case? It turns out it may just be the case. Recent low-glycemic studies have found that a rapid digestion of soft drinks, sweets and white bread can produce an increase in blood glucose. This then causes insulin to be secreted and that then causes the release of IGF-1. This then stimulates epidermal hyperplasia, which causes acne formation. A randomized controlled trial was done to verify this, which verified much of what had been speculated previously. One bit of evidence that lends help to this theory is that there is an absence of acne in many non-Western societies. The reason for this is the low glycemic index in the diet of those individuals. That is not to say that acne does not appear, it just appears in far less quantities than are found in Western nations. Naturally more research is required to see
